After a long wait, the new Tower Hamlets BMX track has finally been completed. The track is located in the playground next to the Mile End leisure centre, just off Burdett Road.

Trying out the track!

Access Sport matched funding from Tower Hamlets Council and the Mayors Legacy Funding has completed the planned five BMX tracks in each of the Olympic boroughs as a legacy from the 2012 Olympics

Although Tower Hamlets Cycling Club has been running popular BMX sessions for the past year, they have had to use temporary venues and limit the number of riders. Howerver, now with the new track, many more sessions can be set up involving a much wider variety of riders.

September 13th saw the official launch of the Tower Hamlets BMX track, with a full afternoons program. Schools and community groups had been invited along, so as well as the usual riders and BMX members from the Hackney, Greenwich and Newham tracks, there were many who came along to try out BMXing for the first time.

Riders at the launch waiting for their turn to try out the track

Everyone had a great experience, especially those who entered the time trials. Prizes were given out at the end of the launch and many new riders were attracted to the regular Saturday sessions run by Lakhdar Djelloul and some commited volunteers and parents from Tower Hamlets Cycling Club.

Home made cakes and quiches were sold by club parents as well as gingerbread and shortbread bicycle cookies baked and kindly donated by Caroline from Tower Hamlets Wheelers!

The track is now becoming a well established part of Tower Hamlets sports for the local community.
